SPICE GIRLS MUSIC
MGMVE
TOUCH Egy lánycsapat, amely később a Spice Girls néven alakult, és sok felállást változtatott Bob és Chris Herbert, a Heart menedzsere által. Bob és Chris Herbert szórólapokat osztogattak az Egyesült Királyság városaiban, és 1994. február 14-én hirdetést tettek fel a The Stage újságban a lánycsapat meghallgatására.
MEGHALLGATÁSOK
A meghallgatásokra a Danceworks Studiosban, a Balderton Street-ben, Londonban, az Egyesült Királyságban került sor 1994. március 4-én. 400 lány jelentkezett, de csak körülbelül 100-at hívtak meg a személyes meghallgatásra. 10 fős csoportokra osztották őket, és egy rutint táncoltak a Stay by Eternal-ra. Utána körülbelül 50 lány maradt a meghallgatás második részében, ahol mindegyiküknek szólót kellett előadniuk, egy-egy dalt énekelve a magukkal hozott kísérő kazettára.
A lányok a következő dalokat választották énekelni: Melanie Chisholm a Pointer Sisters I'm So Excited című dalát, Melanie Brown Whitney Houston The Greatest Love of All című számát, Victoria Adams Liza Minnelli Mein Herr-jét, Michelle Stephenson pedig Dina Carroll Don't Be a Strangerét énekelte.
Geri Halliwell látta a hirdetést, de lemaradt az első meghallgatásokról, mivel meglátogatta a nagymamáját Spanyolországban.
Lianne Morgan nem tudott részt venni, de elküldte a "Stop This Heart" című eredeti dal demószalagját és egy fejlövést a vezetőségnek.
A meghallgatáson részt vett, de a következő szakaszba nem választott lánynevek között szerepelt: Natasha Jenssen, Rebecca Williams, Niki Robinson, Krissy Humphries, Sara Guest, Rachel Porter Moore, Samia Rida, Melanie Housley, Toni Jenkins, Rebecca Ross, Catherine Carroll, Tracey Shinnalletd, T McCacey ,Benedicte Swendgaard, Zoe Bolton, Rebecca Gethings, Leanne Golding, Sarah Rorbach, Hannah Robinson, Sammy Harrison, Caroline Fleming, Michy Hough sok más mellett.
Minden lány hazament, és néhány hetet vártak a válaszra.
A meghallgatásra 1994. május 17-én került sor a Nomis Studiosban a Sanctuary Roadon, W14-ben. A lányokat az első meghallgatások után 10-re csökkentették a 400 jelentkező közül. A vezetőség már megrajzolta azt az öt lányt, akikről úgy gondolták, hogy az együttes létrejönne: Michelle Stephensont, Melanie Brownt, Lianne Morgant, Victoria Adamst és Suzanne Tinkert. A másik öt résztvevő Victoria Unthank, Tiffany Reed, Melanie Laccohee, Melanie Chisholm és egy lány, aki két héttel korábban telefonált egy esélyt kérve, Geri Halliwell.
Melanie C és Suzanne Tinker nem tudott részt venni a második meghallgatáson. Melanie C-nek problémái voltak a manduláival és Suzanne-val egy bombariadó miatt, ami miatt az összes londoni cső leállt. Szerencsére Melanie C édesanyja telefonált, hogy elmagyarázza a helyzetet, és válaszul azt mondták neki, hogy kap még egy esélyt, ha nem találják meg azt, akit keresnek.
Április 28-án, miután két hónapig látta a hirdetést, Geri újra meglátta, és úgy döntött, telefonál, hátha van esélye. A vezetőség megengedte neki, hogy az utolsó tíz közé kerüljön.
Végül is megérkezett, és készítettek egy szólóinterjút, amelyben Geri is elénekelte az I Wanna Be A Nightclub Queen-t. Mivel idősebbnek nézett ki, mint a többi lány, megkérdezték tőle a korát, amire ő ezt válaszolta:
"Annyi idős vagyok, amennyit szeretnél. Tíz éves leszek nagy mellekkel, ha akarod."
Varázsa megnyerte a bírálóbizottságot, és megerősítette pozícióját a meghallgatásokon.
Az interjúk után mindannyiukat két négy lányból álló csoportra osztották, és egy táncprogramot kellett létrehozniuk az Eternal Just A Step From Heaven című dalához. Az egyik csoport: Victoria, Melanie B, Michelle és Lianne. A második csoportot Geri, Melanie Laccohee, Victoria Unthank alkotta, akik koreografálták a rutint, valamint egy negyedik lány, Tiffany Reed. Az első csoporthoz aztán Geri csatlakozott, amelyben megtanították a táncukat.
Később mindannyian szólódalokat énekeltek, amelyeket Melanie B Queen Of The Night, Victoria pedig egy dallamtól eltérő dalt énekelt, ahogy az önéletrajzában is elmondta.
A meghallgatások után, amikor a lányok szünetet tartottak és teáztak, az öt lánynak (Victoria, Melanie B, Michelle, Lianne és Geri) közölték, hogy őket választották a bandába.
1994. június 7-én, és miután elküldtek nekik egy kazettát a "Signed, Sealed, Deliveed, I'm Yours" próbájára, a lányokat megkérték, hogy jöjjenek vissza, hogy újra elbizonytalanodjanak, hány lányt szeretnének a csoportba, a Nomis Studiosban. Sajnos Lianne Morgan kapott egy levelet, amelyben azt mondták neki, hogy egy kicsit idősebbnek néz ki, mint a többiek. A vezetőség felvette a kapcsolatot Victoria Unthankkal, de ő megtagadta a részvételt, mert az nagyon kevés pénzt adna neki, már dolgozott, és jó fizetése van, és a zenekar fő énekese akart lenni. A vezetőség ezután felvette Melanie Chisholmot, hogy részt vegyen a harmadik meghallgatáson Lianne helyére.
Ezután a lányoknak egyedül, majd csoportban kellett elénekelniük a Signed, Sealed, Delivered by Stevie Wonder szavait. Végül azt mondták nekik, hogy mindannyian bekerültek a zenekarba.
PRÓBÁK
Az első tényleges próbák a Trinity Studios utolsó meghallgatásainak hetének vasárnapján kezdődtek, miközben egy hetet egy surrey-i vendégházban töltöttek. Egy héttel később, június 19-én bemutatták Bob és Chris Herbert finanszírozóját, Chic Murphyt. Fekete-fehér ruhába voltak öltözve, miközben kórusban táncoltak és egy előkészített Take Me Away dalt énekeltek.
Aztán a tavaszt és a nyarat a Boyne Hill Roadon, Maidenheadben próbálták. Melanie Brown és Melanie Chisholm megosztott egy szobát, Michelle és Victoria megosztott egy szobát, és Gerinek volt egy kis szobája. A Trinity Studiosban folytatták a próbát három dallal: We're Gonna Make It Happen, Take Me Away és I Want You, I Need You.

VÁLTOZÁSOK A FELÁLLÁSBAN
Július közepén egy kéthetes szünetben a vezetőség úgy döntött, hogy elengedi Michelle-t, mivel úgy tűnt, nem illik bele, és személyes kötelezettségei miatt is. Cseréket kellett találni, így a Touch énekedzője, Pepi Lemer egy lányra gondolt, aki emlékezett a két évvel korábbi edzésre. Abigel Kist (néha tévesen Kis Abigailnek nevezték) behívták, és elénekelt egy soul dalt a vezetőségnek, aminek a vége az lett, hogy két nappal később kiválasztották. Ennek ellenére úgy döntött, hogy személyes elkötelezettségei miatt kilép a zenekarból, ráadásul túl fiatal volt.
Július végén Pepi emlékezett Emma Buntonra, egy lányra, akit két évvel korábban tanított, és 3 hétig próbálta felkutatni. Miután meglátogatta a Főiskolát, ahol tanította, megkapta a telefonszámát, és beszélt az anyjával. Pepi elvitte Emmát Erwin Keiles házába meghallgatásra Chris előtt, és helyet ajánlottak neki a bandában. Augusztus végén megérkezett egy hetes tárgyalásra. Nemcsak Herberték szívélyes fogadtatásával fogadták, hanem a lányokhoz is azonnal kötődött:
– Azonnal tudtam, hogy ő az. - Geri
"Elég vicces volt későn belépni a bandába, mert a többiek egy kicsit ismerték egymást. Először egy vasútállomáson kellett találkoznom velük, és jónéhány lány ácsorgott. De amint megláttam őket, tudtam, kik ők. Egyből rákattantunk." - Emma
Kicsit honvágyam lett, úgyhogy elmentem és sírtam Geri vállán. Ez összekapcsolt minket, és ez a többi lánnyal is így volt. - Emma, amikor először volt távol a családtól
A lányok együtt folytatták a próbát, és megírták első közös dalukat, az It's Just One Of The Days-t (egy másik dal, amelyet soha nem adtak ki).

SPICE GIRLS
Szeptember folyamán Tim Hawes-szal dolgoztak a "Sugar And Spice" című dalon, és ő azt javasolta nekik, hogy változtassák meg a nevüket Touch-ról Spice-re (később Spice Girls névre keresztelték).
1994 októberében rávették a vezetőséget, hogy a Trinity Studiosban tartsanak bemutatót babababa ruhákkal, amibe beleegyeztek. Két hónappal később egy második bemutatót terveztek dalszövegírók és producerek számára, amely december 7-én a Nomis Studiosban fog fellépni. Nagyszerű fogadtatásban részesültek a zeneipar bennfenteseitől.
"A szüleink pénzéből felállítottunk egy kirakatot a Nomis Studiosban. Körülbelül 20 kiadó jött, és vártuk, hogy ki tud nekünk megfelelő üzletet adni." - Emma
Az 1994-es karácsonyi ünnepek alatt Geri és Melanie B úgy döntöttek, hogy nem írják alá a menedzsment által felajánlott szerződéseket, sőt tanácsokat is kérnek másoktól, köztük Victoria apjától, Tony Adamstől.
1995. január végén a vezetőség átadta nekik a szerződéseket, de úgy döntöttek, hogy nem írják alá a menedzsment utasításai miatt. Ezután más producereket kerestek, hátha aláírják őket. Ezután beiratkoztak Simon Fuller menedzsmentjéhez, a 19 Managementhez.
