Kislemezek az albumról Today

Az angol énekes-dalszerző, Mel B második stúdióalbuma, akit teljes nevén, Melanie Brownként tartanak nyilván. Az egyetlen kislemez a "Today" volt, amelyhez Brown egy kéthetes promóciós turnén vett részt az Egyesült Királyságban. A kislemez a negyvenegyedik helyre lépett, és ott is csúcsot ért el.

HÁTTÉR

"Egy kicsit zongorás, akusztikus gitáros. Egyáltalán nem R&B. A konyhámban csináltam két londoni barátommal - Kevinnel és Julie-val. Először ki akarom próbálni, mielőtt bármit is döntenék, és látni akarom, milyen a reakció, és hogy tetszik előadni, mert eddig csak a konyhámban voltam ott egy mikrofonnal, és énekeltem. — Brown az album felvételéről.
Miután 2001-ben elhagyta a Virgin Recordst, Brownt már nem érdekelte a zenei pályafutás. Ez idő alatt Brown a televíziózásnak és a színészetnek szentelte magát – szerepelt a Burn It című drámasorozat első évadában, vezette a This Is My Moment című tévéműsort, és felvette az LD 50 Lethal Dose, a The Seat Filler, a Telling Lies című filmeket és a Voodoo Princess című dokumentumfilmet. 2004-ben debütált a Rent című musicalben Mimi Marquez szerepében, és ez ösztönözte a zeneiparba való visszatérését. Az L.A. State of Mind 2005. június 27-én jelent meg az Amber Café gondozásában az Egyesült Királyságban. Két formátumban jelent meg: normál CD-ként és limitált kiadásban egy 30 perces DVD-vel, egy Mark McConnell által forgatott és rendezett részletes dokumentumfilmmel, amely Brown Los Angeles-i életét részletezi. Tíz évvel később, 2015. december 11-én az album az Egyesült Államokban és Japánban csak a Right Recordings gondozásában jelent meg, limitált fizikai kiadással. 2016. január 8-án a standard kiadás Az L.A. State of Mind című albumot Kanadában a Universal Music adta ki.

KRITIKA

Az L.A. State of Mind általánosságban vegyes és negatív kritikákat kapott. Jon O'Brien, az AllMusic munkatársa másfél csillagot adott rá, és megjegyezte, hogy az album az évtized egyik legrosszabbja. A dalokat úgy jellemezte, mint amelyek "gyermeki dallamokkal és elavult produkcióval rendelkeznek [amelyek] teljes mértékben reprezentálják az albumot átható amatőr jelleget". A dalokat elemezve O'Brien megjegyezte, hogy a "Music of the Night" kudarcnak és egy késett kísérletnek hangzik, hogy Ricky Martin hangzására hasonlítson, a "Stay in Bed Days" olyan volt, mintha valaki Shania Twaint énekelne karaokéban, a "Bad, Bad Girl", amelyet "minden közül a legrosszabbnak" neveztek, "egy fülsiketítően rossz próbálkozás a 80-as évekbeli elektró zenére, amely úgy hangzik, mintha egy gyerek Casio billentyűzeten vették volna fel". *KISLEMEZEK*

TODAY Egy brit énekes-dalszerző, Melanie Brown dala, amely második stúdióalbumának, az L.A. State of Mind-nek (2005) a vezető és egyetlen kislemezeként jelent meg. A dalt teljes egészében Brown írta, a produceri munkálatai pedig Kevin Malpass voltak. A dal 2005. június 13-án jelent meg az Egyesült Királyságban, és a 41. helyet érte el a brit kislemezlistán, mindössze két hétig volt slágerlistán. A videoklipet Mark McConnell rendezte, és Los Angelesben, Kaliforniában forgatták.

BEAUTIFUL GIRL Pletyka szerint ebből a dalból készült volna el a második kislemez, de az album, és Today hatalmasat bukott, ezért Mel B abba hagyta az albumot. A dal hasonló, mmint Lullaby, a lányáról szól.
